Course of Study at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg

Highlights of our program include:

Attending Staff

Muhlenberg has an Attending (teaching) staff of over forty. All of the specialties are represented.

Restorative Dentistry

A large and varied patient load will allow the Resident to gain experience using many different methods and materials. Esthetic procedures including metal free crowns, vital bleaching, and veneer cases are possible.

Endodontics

Rotary endodontics is taught using the Tulsa system. To aid in endodontics, a networked Schick computed digital radiography system is used. A computer system is located in each operatory. We have recently purchased an endodontic microscope with a color camera attachment.

Pediatric Dentistry

An area of O.R. Experience, as well as the teaching of other sedation techniques, including nitrous oxide.

Oral Surgery

The three Residents extract over 1,000 teeth in the year. Other highlights include O.R. experience with our OMS teaching staff, pre-prosthetic surgery, and 3rd molar extractions under IV sedation.

Prosthetics

An ample caseload that provides about 100 cases of removable prosthetics per year. The resident will have the opportunity to complete single crowns as well as bridgework . Various impression materials are available including reversible hydrocolloid. Alternate designs including Targis/Vectris, Captek, Empress, and Procera are also possible.

Periodontics

The Resident usually completes 12 periodontal surgeries during the year under the direct supervision of our Periodontal staff.

Special Care

The department of Anesthesia provides sedation in the dental center allowing the Resident and Attending to provide comprehensive dental care for mentally handicapped individuals. Many other programs complete these cases in the operating room.

Implants

Muhlenberg has a comprehensive implant program that includes seminars, full day lectures, and individual case presentations. The Resident will have the opportunity to place and restore several implants during their Residency.

Lectures

Over 300 lecture hours in all disciplines. Lectures are usually held on Wednesday mornings.
